*8th St. Wine Cellar & L

[in progress]

Stampede for a tree? Seriously? Oh, Miley Cyrus was there and the Jonas Brothers were supposed to be there.

Fruity, mineraly Riesling, crisp, bright Fanny Bay oysters, decadent chicken liver pate and scrumdiddlyumptious mushroom truffle bruschetta.

Stronger than Blood

Besides mom, M has been a major recipient of gifts this year. My father gave her a remote controlled helicopter, a refurbished cigar box and a handmade shank. My mother gave her a Swiss Army knife and luggage. The children my parents have given birth to have received nothing. They must really like her.

And why are they always giving her knives?!

M's answer: they know I have to protect myself from Wellesley girls.

Again, it's not that the girl went to Wellesley, it's that she was a computer science major.

Oh, I'll Take 7

On my way back from lunch, I passed the holiday fair at St. Bart's (I'm a sucker for street vendors). I spied these Burberry-esque cashmere scarves and only had enough cash for 1 fuchsia plaid scarf. It was so cute, soft and at such an irresistible price that I took an order from M, got cash and went back after my 2:30 meeting. I chatted with M about my initial offer and went in, expecting to haggle.

I had chatted the guy up in Chinese before and he was really nice. I made my offer and he said in Chinese, "For a pretty girl, sure." I grabbed 5 grey ones, a red one for mom and a pink one for Doris. I came in the door saying, "who wants gifts?" Mom ran over saying, "I do!!!"

S Factor: 3.6

Bruised and battered, I emerged having conquered the Cerberus of my challenge tricks: the Peter Pan, Tinkerbell and Ron de Jong. Now, to get that corkscrew and body spiral...

    2012 and 2014 Olympics

We couldn't help ourselves. I gave M's Christmas present to her last weekend and she told me my present this weekend.

She got me a pole so that I can train at home and compete in the 2012 Olympics! I've been checking out the competition and I am going to have to work really hard if I'm going to beat the Australians. They are hardcore dancers.

I got M the 2008 Ride Rapture board - we hate the 2009 designs so it was challenging to find her the 2008 board at the right size. But, there it is and her Flow bindings come in this weekend. We can't wait to start training for the 2014 Winter Olympics. Halfpipe, of course.

    Pug Rage

Photo 1 is what I came home to today (photo 2 is what my bed normally looks like). Sometimes Petunia would knock off 1 pillow to sleep on but today, she must've been in a frenzy because the bed is a mess.

Hillary Clinton Nominated for Secretary of State

In the wake of the recent horrific terrorist attacks in Mumbai, President-elect Obama presented his National Security Team today with Hillary Clinton as his Secretary of State. If confirmed, she would be the third female Secretary of State (after Madeleine Albright and Condeleeza Rice) and the second Wellesley woman (after Madeleine Albright).

I am proud of her and fearful of what lies ahead. As a country, we desperately need to build stronger relationships with the global community and address very serious situations that are spiralling dangerously out of control.

    World AIDS Day

Today marks the 20th commemoration of World AIDS Day. Despite nearly a quarter of a century of treatment and research, over 30 million people are currently afflicted with HIV and close to 2 million die from AIDS each year. Most worrisome is the momentum of the pandemic itself: 2008 registered nearly 3 million new cases of the disease, and only a small proportion of them are likely to receive treatment before perishing (http://www.nytimes.com/).

While I may know many more people who are living with HIV/ AIDS, only one has ever really "come out" to me. He was the president before me of an LGBT organization and full of vivacity. I didn't think of his illness until he passed away after a long and painful fight. I still remember going to the wake (and passing M on the NJ Turnpike as she was heading up to NY). He was loved by so many people - there was a long line to pay our respects, the din in the room was loud with grief and stories of how much has done for everyone, pictures lined every inch of the room and there were large flower arrangements everywhere. The tragedies of this illness lie not only in the pain and misery it inflicts but also in the bright lights it takes away from us.

    In memory of Richard Russo.
